The trip will focus on migrating birds but Spring wildflowers, Butterflies, Dragonflies and herps will not be passed up. This trip will be led by Club president and former DCR Assistant Regional Director at Quabbin Dave Small. As part of the Quabbin Public Access plan ABNC is one of the clubs authorized to lead a vehicular trip inside the Quabbin. ![]() We just received our access permit for a guided field trip inside some of the Gates in the North Quabbin. He has also acquired the necessary permits to work with bald eagles, successfully rehabilitating and releasing several.7:30 – 2:00 PM - Vehicle Field trip inside Quabbin Many of the birds that come to the center have been struck by cars or trucks, and Ricardi said he’s been able to release about 60 percent of the birds that come to him back into the wild. ![]() Throughout the interactive hour, Ricardi peppered his presentation with information about each bird’s defining features and how those special features help them in the wild.įor example, he said, the pointed wings and stiff feathers of the peregrine falcon – along with an additional protective membrane over its eyes and a bump in its nostrils to control air flow at high speeds – allow it the ability to do death defying hunting dives at up to 180 miles per hour. They learned that owls don’t build nests, female birds are typically larger than their male counterparts, condor wings are larger than eagle wings, and that members of the animal kingdom with a dark mark under their eyes (not just birds) are an indicator that they are fast animals. The three came away with a whole bunch of fun facts about birds of prey. ![]() “What I liked best was watching the screech owl turn his head all the way around,” said Owen, 6, of Somers, who came with his mom, Andie, and with Judy Thoelen of Enfield.
